How to choose the right motor for your diaphragm pump

You've decided you need a diaphragm pump for your new or existing product. How do you make sure the one you choose has the right motor? This is a big decision because the motor is almost always the single most expensive component of any diaphragm pump and heavily affects its performance.

In today's Rapid Insight, Dynaflo President, Lorenzo Majno, goes over the unique motor requirements of different applications and which diaphragm pump motor is best suited to meet those needs.

Let's say all you need is basic performance. You don't need to max out the pressure of the vacuum. A smaller, lower-cost DC brush motor is the right choice for you.

On the other hand, let's say you need to get very high pressures, very high vacuums, and restart under load—which means that if the pressure or the vacuum drops a little bit, you want to be able to start the pump back up. Not all pumps can do that, so you might need a high torque brush DC motor.

What if you have a diaphragm pump that needs to be on for thousands of hours? In that case, a brushless DC motor would be a wise choice. They're a little bit more money. They require a controller; some are built in; some are separate. So, the electronics play a role, but they would be a better choice for a pump that needs to run for a long time.

When you require special control parameters, for a medical device, for example, you might need a custom-built solution to achieve your unique needs.

These are just a few of the typical conversations we have with customers when helping them choose the right motor for their diaphragm pumps. Is there anything you need to know that we didn't cover? Let us know in the comments, and we will do our best to answer
