Which is better? A flat or convoluted diaphragm?

There are evident differences between a flat and convoluted diaphragm, and there are different scenarios where one diaphragm might be better than another for your diaphragm pump.

Let's dig into the differences between flat and convoluted diaphragms to help you choose which would be best for your product.

Flat Diaphragms

Pros:

A flat diaphragm is good because you can get high compression ratios and slightly higher pressures in vacuums than a convoluted diaphragm.

Cons:

A flat diaphragm may have a slightly shorter life because it's being stretched back and forth. (The power consumption for a flat diaphragm is around 3 W).

Convolute Diaphragms

Pros:

A convolute diaphragm is good for applications where you want low power consumption because the rubber doesn't stretch—it rolls.

The power consumption for a convoluted diaphragm is less than 1 W. So, for battery-powered applications, a convoluted diaphragm is better for power efficiency than a flat diaphragm.

Neither Pro nor Con:

Serviceability is the same with a flat and convoluted diaphragm.

Which diaphragm is right for you?

Choose a flat diaphragm when you want slightly higher pressure and aren't too concerned about how long it will last.

Choose a convoluted diaphragm if you want long life and low power consumption.
